TINUBU: FROM REFORM TO PROSPERITY — A NEW DIRECTION FOR NIGERIA
By Umar Umb
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is positioning its economic agenda around a transition from difficult reforms towards broader prosperity, with emphasis on economic stability, infrastructure, agriculture, job creation and investment.
In his October 1, 2026 Independence Day address, President Tinubu said Nigeria had passed through a difficult period of economic adjustment and was now entering what he described as an “age of prosperity.” The President highlighted economic growth, improved foreign reserves, a more stable foreign exchange market and increased non-oil exports among developments recorded under the administration.
The administration has also continued to focus on major infrastructure projects, agricultural productivity, energy, digital connectivity and opportunities for young Nigerians. In his third-anniversary statement, Tinubu highlighted ongoing road and rail projects, reforms in the oil and gas sector, local refining, agricultural interventions and the expansion of access to higher education through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.
For President Tinubu, the central challenge now is ensuring that economic reforms translate into tangible improvements in the daily lives of ordinary Nigerians. His administration has identified lower production and transportation costs, employment, industrial growth and support for vulnerable households as key priorities.
The journey remains subject to public debate, particularly over the immediate cost of reforms and the pace at which their benefits are reaching households. Reuters has reported that the reforms have helped stabilise public finances and attract investment, while also noting the continuing cost-of-living pressures experienced by many Nigerians.
As Nigeria moves forward, the effectiveness of the Tinubu administration’s agenda will ultimately be measured not only by economic indicators, but by how strongly Nigerians experience improvements in jobs, food affordability, infrastructure, education, healthcare and household welfare.
Nigeria’s story continues — from reform, towards the promise of prosperity.
