MUHAMMAD ALI PATE: DRIVING TINUBU’S HEALTH AGENDA AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF NIGERIA’S HEALTH SECTOR
By Umar Umb
The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has continued to place healthcare transformation at the centre of its national development agenda, with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, under the leadership of Coordinating Minister Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, CON, advancing reforms aimed at improving health outcomes and strengthening Nigeria’s health system.
Professor Pate currently serves as the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, with the Ministry’s reform agenda centred on improving governance, strengthening population health outcomes, unlocking the health value chain and enhancing health security.
Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the Federal Government has continued to invest in healthcare infrastructure, primary healthcare, emergency medical services, maternal and child health, human resources for health, disease prevention and local production of medicines and medical supplies.
One of the notable developments has been the expansion of education and training opportunities for nurses and midwives. The Federal Ministry of Health reported that enrolment in nursing and midwifery education increased from 28,000 in May 2023 to 110,000 in the 2024/2025 academic year, reflecting the administration’s focus on strengthening the health workforce.
The Federal Government has also continued efforts to improve maternal and newborn healthcare, recognising the critical role of skilled health professionals, particularly midwives, in reducing preventable maternal and child deaths.
In August 2026, Professor Pate also led efforts to strengthen collaboration across government through the inauguration of a high-level inter-ministerial platform on family planning, health, human capital and national development. He emphasised the importance of transforming Nigeria’s large youthful population into a productive national asset through investments in health, education and empowerment.
Another major area of attention has been health-sector accountability. In August 2026, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission inaugurated a joint task team aimed at strengthening preventive controls, improving accountability and protecting public investments in the health sector.
The administration has also expanded healthcare infrastructure across the country. In May 2026, President Tinubu commissioned and inaugurated health facilities and infrastructure across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, alongside the launch of the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System emergency response fleet.
These initiatives reflect a broader effort to move Nigeria’s health system towards stronger primary healthcare, better emergency response, improved quality of care and greater access to essential health services.
Professor Pate’s role has therefore become closely associated with the implementation of the health component of the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in translating policy priorities into reforms across healthcare governance, workforce development, service delivery and health security.
For Nigeria, the importance of these reforms extends beyond hospitals and medical facilities. A healthier population contributes directly to productivity, education, employment, economic growth and national development.
As the Tinubu administration continues its development programme, the sustained implementation of health-sector reforms will remain important to ensuring that Nigerians can access quality, affordable and equitable healthcare.
With Professor Muhammad Ali Pate coordinating the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the government's stated direction remains focused on building a health system that can better protect lives, strengthen human capital and contribute to Nigeria’s broader development aspirations.
