PROF. MUHAMMAD ALI PATE REAFFIRMS FG’S COMMITMENT TO REDUCING MATERNAL AND NEWBORN DEATHS
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths across Nigeria through stronger primary healthcare, improved health financing and coordinated interventions.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, gave the assurance while speaking on a newly launched incentive programme designed to increase access to essential maternal and newborn healthcare services nationwide.
The programme was flagged off by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, with a focus on removing financial barriers that prevent women from accessing antenatal care, skilled birth attendance and postnatal services.
The initiative further strengthens the MAMII — Maternal and Newborn Mortality in Nigeria Initiative, which targets high-burden Local Government Areas through interventions such as skilled deliveries, emergency referrals and postnatal care.
Prof. Pate stressed that government investments must translate into tangible improvements at the grassroots, including functional health facilities, skilled healthcare workers, essential medicines and affordable healthcare services.
He expressed optimism that stronger collaboration and effective implementation would help ensure that every mother receives timely and quality care, while every newborn is given a safe and healthy start to life.
