INDEPENDENCE DAY: NIGERIA IS OUR SHARED RESPONSIBILITY

As Nigeria marks another Independence Day, the occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on some of the fundamental values that should guide our national life: integrity, responsibility and respect for our differences.
In a message marking the occasion, Dalen P. Kumswa, representing the Langtang North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, said Nigeria belongs to all its citizens, regardless of their states, regions, clans, cultures, religions, languages or political affiliations.
According to him, Nigerians may hold different political opinions and come from different communities, including Langtang North and South, yet they share common hopes and aspirations for a better country.
He stressed that differences should never become an excuse for citizens to disconnect themselves from the challenges confronting the nation.
“We must never get to the point where we say, ‘Nigeria is not my problem.’ It is our problem,” Kumswa said.
He noted that the challenges facing the country do not discriminate on the basis of tribe, religion, region or political affiliation, pointing out that insecurity, institutional failure and corruption ultimately affect citizens across different sections of society.
Kumswa also called for greater integrity not only among public officials but among citizens themselves, stressing that building a better Nigeria requires collective responsibility.
He urged Nigerians to respect their differences and recognise that disagreement does not have to result in division.
According to him, citizens do not have to belong to the same political party, support the same candidate or share the same opinions before respecting one another’s right to be heard.
“Our diversity should be a strength, not a weapon against one another,” he stated.
The lawmaker further described Independence Day as more than a celebration of Nigeria’s history, saying it should also serve as a moment for citizens to reflect on their responsibilities to their communities and the country at large.
He maintained that the Nigeria citizens desire cannot be built by government alone, but requires citizens who are willing to speak up, reject wrongdoing and take responsibility for the future of the country.
“Nigeria is our shared home. Its problems are our collective responsibility. Its future is our collective responsibility,” Kumswa said.
He called on Nigerians to disagree with integrity, engage with respect and continue working together despite their differences.
“From Langtang North and South to the rest of Nigeria, let us continue to believe in a country where every citizen has a voice, every community matters, and our differences do not divide our common purpose,” he added.
Happy Independence Day, Nigeria. 🇳🇬
