IBRAHIM KABIR MASARI: TRACING THE JOURNEY OF A VETERAN POLITICAL STRATEGIST
From Party Politics to the Presidential Arena, a Career Defined by Experience, Loyalty and Political Engagement
By Umar Umb
In Nigeria’s constantly changing political landscape, few careers follow a completely straight path. Political fortunes rise and fall, alliances evolve, parties merge or divide, and individuals move between different levels of political responsibility.
Hon. Ibrahim Kabir Masari’s political career provides an interesting example of this reality.
A prominent political figure from Katsina State, Masari has spent years participating in Nigeria’s political process, particularly within the political movement that eventually produced the All Progressives Congress (APC). His career has included party leadership, political mobilisation and, more recently, responsibilities connected to the Presidency.
Yet, as with any political career, his story is best understood through both his achievements and the questions surrounding the effectiveness and impact of the roles he has occupied.
A CAREER ROOTED IN PARTY POLITICS
Masari’s political rise is closely connected to the evolution of opposition politics in Nigeria.
His involvement in the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and subsequent participation in the formation and development of the APC exposed him to the realities of coalition politics and party organisation.
The emergence of the APC represented one of the most significant realignments in Nigeria’s recent political history. Bringing together politicians and political groups from different backgrounds required extensive negotiations, coordination and mobilisation.
Masari became part of that broader political process.
His subsequent position as a national officer of the APC further established him within the party’s national structure.
THE 2022 RUNNING-MATE EPISODE
One of the most consequential moments in Masari’s public political profile came in 2022, when he was announced as the running mate to then APC presidential candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu on an interim basis.
The arrangement was short-lived.
The APC eventually settled on Kashim Shettima as Tinubu’s substantive running mate, following further political consultations.
The episode nevertheless placed Masari at the centre of a major national political discussion.
It would be an exaggeration, however, to interpret the temporary nomination alone as proof of political dominance. Rather, it demonstrated that he was considered sufficiently relevant within the political calculations surrounding the APC presidential campaign at that particular moment.
FROM PARTY POLITICS TO THE PRESIDENCY
Following the 2023 presidential election, Masari moved closer to the federal executive establishment.
His appointment as Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters gave him a formal role in a political environment involving the Presidency, the ruling party and a wide range of political stakeholders.
Such a position can provide considerable access and responsibility, but it also comes with expectations.
Political advisers are often judged not simply by their proximity to power but by the effectiveness of their consultations, the quality of their advice and their ability to help manage political relationships.
Consequently, the long-term assessment of Masari’s Presidential role will depend on measurable outcomes rather than the title of the position alone.
THE STRENGTH OF EXPERIENCE
One of Masari’s clearest political assets is experience.
Having participated in different phases of Nigeria’s contemporary party politics, he has witnessed the transition from opposition movements to governing-party structures.
That experience can be valuable in a political system where relationships between the federal government, state governments, legislators, political parties and grassroots organisations frequently require negotiation.
His understanding of political networks, particularly in northern Nigeria, is another aspect of his public profile that has attracted attention.
THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY
However, a balanced assessment should not portray any politician as universally successful or universally accepted.
Like many political figures operating within Nigeria’s highly competitive political environment, Masari’s influence and effectiveness are ultimately matters that can be debated.
Supporters may point to his political longevity, party loyalty and access to senior political circles as evidence of relevance.
Critics and political observers, on the other hand, may reasonably ask how much of that influence has translated into concrete political, institutional or developmental outcomes.
That distinction is important.
Political access does not automatically equal policy success, just as a relatively low public profile does not necessarily mean a politician lacks influence.
A LOW-PROFILE POLITICAL STYLE
Masari has generally maintained a relatively measured public profile compared with politicians who dominate daily political commentary.
This can be interpreted in different ways.
Supporters may see it as evidence of a politician who prefers consultation and behind-the-scenes engagement to public confrontation.
Others may argue that political office holders should communicate more openly with the public and provide clearer evidence of their activities and achievements.
Both perspectives form part of the wider debate about the role of political advisers and party strategists in a democratic system.
KATSINA AND THE NATIONAL STAGE
Masari’s roots in Katsina remain an important component of his political identity.
Katsina is one of Nigeria’s politically significant northern states, and political figures from the state have historically played important roles in national politics.
Masari’s movement from state-level political networks into national party and Presidential politics therefore reflects a broader pattern in Nigerian politics: local political relationships can become the foundation for national relevance.
At the same time, national political responsibility requires a broader perspective.
The expectations placed on someone operating within the federal political structure extend beyond regional interests to include the wider concerns of Nigerians across different parts of the country.
WHAT WILL DEFINE HIS LEGACY?
Ultimately, the most important question surrounding Ibrahim Kabir Masari is not simply how close he has been to political power, but what lasting contribution his political career will leave behind.
His supporters can point to his long participation in party politics, his involvement in the APC’s political journey and his subsequent role within the Presidency.
But history will judge political careers by more than appointments and proximity to influential figures.
It will also consider effectiveness, public accountability, political reconciliation, contribution to democratic institutions and the ability to produce tangible results.
Those are standards that apply to Masari just as they apply to every other public official.
CONCLUSION
Ibrahim Kabir Masari remains an interesting figure in Nigeria’s contemporary political landscape.
His journey from party politics to a position within the Presidential political structure demonstrates considerable political resilience and adaptability.
But a fair assessment should neither turn his career into political mythology nor dismiss his contribution.
He is, by available public evidence, an experienced political actor who has remained relevant through several stages of Nigeria’s evolving political system.
The next chapter of his career will determine whether that experience translates into a more enduring political legacy.
For now, his story is best described not simply as one of power, but as a continuing journey through the opportunities, responsibilities and challenges that come with operating at the highest levels of Nigerian politics.
