President Tinubu Hails Nigeria’s Admission into World Energy Council, Congratulates Abdulrazaq Isa, Bala Wunti

 Abuja, Nigeria – August 7, 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s formal admission into the World Energy Council (WEC) as its newest National Member Committee, describing the development as a landmark achievement that reflects growing international confidence in Nigeria’s energy reforms and leadership role across Africa.

In a statement issued by the Presidency on Thursday, President Tinubu said Nigeria’s membership in the century-old global energy network, which comprises more than 100 countries, would provide the nation with a stronger platform to influence global discussions on energy security, energy equity, and sustainable development.

The President congratulated the inaugural leadership of WEC Nigeria, led by Mr. Abdulrazaq Isa, OFR, as Chairman, and Mr. Bala Wunti as Chief Executive Officer, alongside other distinguished Nigerians appointed to serve on the Council’s inaugural Board.

According to President Tinubu, the composition of the Board reflects a broad representation of stakeholders across the energy value chain, including regulators, industry leaders, financial experts, academics, professional associations, and members of the Future Energy Leaders community.

He described Abdulrazaq Isa as a patriotic Nigerian and visionary industrialist whose investments in indigenous refining and industrial energy have contributed significantly to strengthening local enterprise and advancing national development.

The President also paid glowing tribute to Bala Wunti, describing him as one of Nigeria’s foremost energy strategists and reform advocates whose more than three decades of service have been defined by integrity, innovation, and impactful reforms that boosted national revenue generation and improved investor confidence in the energy sector.

President Tinubu noted that the blend of experienced industry professionals, policymakers, financial experts, and emerging leaders on the Board would provide the balance, credibility, and neutrality required to drive the Council’s mission in Nigeria.

«“Nigeria has joined the World Energy Council to lead, not just participate — to ensure Africa’s voice shapes global energy decisions,” the President stated.»

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s support for WEC Nigeria as a neutral and technology-agnostic platform for policy dialogue, investment mobilisation, innovation, and international collaboration.

The President further reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to working closely with the World Energy Council’s global leadership and member countries to advance secure, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions for all.

He wished the Chairman, CEO, and members of the inaugural Board success as they undertake what he described as a historic national responsibility.

The statement was signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
