PRESIDENT TINUBU REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO DEMOCRACY, SECURITY, AND ECONOMIC REFORMS ON DEMOCRACY DAY 2026
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to strengthening democracy, improving national security, and advancing economic reforms as Nigeria marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
In his nationwide address on June 12, President Tinubu described democracy as the foundation of Nigeria's progress, noting that the country has enjoyed 27 consecutive years of democratic governance since 1999. He emphasized the importance of protecting democratic institutions, ensuring credible elections, and promoting peaceful political participation across the nation.
The President called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, and all stakeholders to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections in Ekiti and Osun States, stressing that public confidence in the electoral process remains essential for democratic stability.
Addressing security challenges, Tinubu announced that his administration has intensified efforts against terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping. He revealed that significant investments have been made in the security sector, including the recruitment of over 50,000 police officers and thousands of military personnel, supported by a record security allocation in the 2026 national budget.
The President also highlighted ongoing economic reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, stating that government revenues have increased, transparency has improved, and investor confidence is gradually returning. He noted growing investments in agriculture, energy, manufacturing, technology, transportation, and the creative industries.
On infrastructure and power supply, President Tinubu emphasized the impact of recent electricity sector reforms, including measures aimed at expanding electricity access, reducing metering challenges, and supporting rural electrification projects across the country.
The President paid tribute to heroes of Nigeria's democratic struggle, including Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, Gani Fawehinmi, Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, and many others who sacrificed for the restoration of democratic governance in Nigeria.
President Tinubu further announced plans to honor several pro-democracy activists, journalists, political leaders, and military officers who played significant roles during the June 12 democratic struggle.
He urged Nigerians to remain united regardless of ethnic, religious, or regional differences, emphasizing that national development and security require collective responsibility and shared commitment.
Concluding his address, President Tinubu expressed optimism about Nigeria's future, assuring citizens that despite existing challenges, the nation remains on the path toward greater stability, prosperity, and democratic consolidation.
"Democracy must be felt in the lives of the people, in the opportunities available to our youth, in economic growth, and in the dignity of every Nigerian," the President stated.
